Case Studies

The NPT® is extremely versatile and Alder Hey has already piloted its own specific templates which feed into its ward quality metrics.

In delivering against the national Cancer Care targets, Alder Hey’s Oncology Unit used the NPT to engage with children suffering with all forms of cancer. NPT worked with patients and their families to identify their key issues relating to service delivery.

alder hey specific questions

These items were fed into the NPT® along with specific management questions relating to the patient’s knowledge and understanding of their illness, identification of their current key worker and information on how they wanted to be kept up to date with their patient plan in the future.

The survey was run using the NPT® in wards and clinics at the hospital with patients and their families, using different questionnaire templates specific to each group. Based upon the resulting clear, statistical evidence the Unit was successful in securing charitable funding to improve computer equipment for both patients and their parents, who need to access work e-mails whilst staying at the hospital, and they have also been able to employ a dedicated chef on the Unit.

Critically, the NPT® was used to engage with children during the Unit’s application for Investing in Children accreditation which it secured in April 2009 - making it the first acute Trust to achieve this in Europe.
